Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the region sent earlier today a letter to European Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Joseph Borrell and EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, with the request to exclude the Western Balkans from EU restrictions, concerning the export of medical products for personal protection and obtaining special permits.
The letter signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srđan Darmanović, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia Nikola Dimitrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Ivica Dačić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo Glauk Konjufca, Minister of Foreign Affairs of BiH Bisera Turković and et al. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania Gent Cakaj reads that the coronavirus spread to all parts of the European continent and that in order to overcome this major challenge, more than ever, solidarity and cooperation were needed.
Bearing in mind the fact that on the front line of defense against coronavirus are medical workers and professionals, who need to have the necessary quantities of medical equipment for personal protection at any time, partners from our Region are united and jointly propose the European Commission to consider revising the mentioned rules, reads the letter.
The Western Balkans is part of Europe, surrounded with EU partners. The purchase of this equipment for a population of 17 million people will not have a negative impact on the EU market. An exception to these strict rules would send a positive signal to all European citizens, that successful cooperation and solidarity in Europe is the key for overcoming this great challenge, the letter concludes.
